Severe Storms….Severe Weather Watch
Most of the active storms this afternoon are over East Mississippi and far west/south Alabama where a Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect until later this evening. Several reports of wind and hail have already been received. No major damage, but another day of the pulse severe storms in the south. More storms are forming over portions of eastern Tuscaloosa, central Winston, and northern Cullman counties with some heavy rain and lightning involved. Any storms will have deadly lightning potential yet again this afternoon. Most storms will sag SSE at around 15-20 mph. Some additional development is possible.
Few Strong/Severe Storms
Some storms this afternoon have become quite strong dropping some heavy rain, hail, and gusty winds in there wake. The strongest storms will remain west of I-65 this afternoon and will begin to die off in a matter of an hour or two. Remember, we are in the summer like pattern which means we won’t deal with the threat of tornadic activity due to weak upper level winds for several months unless we are impacted with a landfalling tropical system….which doesn’t seem likely any time soon. Have a great Friday and enjoy some rainfall.
Active Period Ahead…
It looks like we have a more active period of weather ahead for the coming days as we go into the weeks end. Some isolated severe storms are expected over OK/W AR tomorrow evening as our initial impulse begins to kick out. Storms will start firing late in the evening over OK and AR and continue to spread eastward into the night and during the day on Saturday. The SPC has issued a SLGT risk (shown above) across portions of the deep south for Saturday. The risks look to be mainly damaging winds and large hail, but wind profiles do support some isolated super cell development that would include tornadoes if they form. We will likely hit the field early Saturday morning if this is to occur.
The chances decrease somewhat on Sunday, but there is still some chance of severe weather even then. Our final impulse will roll through on Monday evening with another heightened risk of severe storms. Tornadoes could be more common with this impulse as wind profiles look better and surface instability is in place. We are still 5 days away from this shot, so we will get through Saturday first and then have a better determination of Monday’s system.
Severe Storm or Two South
The surface low over south Mississippi is moving eastward along the coastal regions and allowing for heavy rain and the isolated thunderstorm to develop. A severe thunderstorm warning is in effect for Washington and Mobile Counties in south Alabama this evening for this storm moving out of Greene County, Mississippi. Reflectivity looks impressive, but not much is showing up on radial velocity as far as winds go. Some isolated wind damage or small hail can’t be ruled out with this storm.
Rainfall is spreading northeastward across areas mainly south of I-20 and should continue to move across and out of the region later this evening into the overnight. Clearing conditions are expected tomorrow for a short time ahead of our next eventual system to impact the region Thursday and Friday.
