Blanket Warning: East Central Alabama

A developing bow echo is moving across the area and is requiring the NWS in Birmingham to issue severe thunderstorm warnings for the entire area ahead of the line.  With our bow tracking overlay, you can see that this system will effect much of East-Central Alabama over the next hour as it begins to accelerate.  A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect until 8PM CDT this evening for the entire area.  There could be some additional development following this line.  Well keep you posted.

Severe Storms This Evening: West Mississippi

A couple of severe warnings are being required for hail and wind where dewpoints have risen into the lower 60′s.  Some thunderstorms will be possible across Alabama tonight, but none of the severe variety.  We don’t have enough time for moisture recovery of this magnitude.  Just some nice thunder and maybe a lightning bolt.

Cooler weather in store from late Tuesday through the week with several potential shots of wintery weather around the corner for much of Alabama.  More on that later.

Winter Storm Update…Warning Expanded South

Just a quick update on the winter storm situation for the evening.  The National Weather Service has expanded the winter storm warning to the south to include: Jefferson, Shelby, Talladega, Clay, and Randolph Counties.  The winter weather advisory has been expanded southward to include the entire area also.

Our system continues to dig southward and precipitation is increasing across Arkansas.  Snow/Fog has been reported this hour at Hot Springs, AR which is pretty far south.  It may be warm outside right now, but the temperature gradient is very strong along this line of precipitation and snow is falling very heavy within the band.  More will develop as our system continues to organize this evening and moves in our general direction.

Timing:  We expect the snow to begin in areas in the west around 10-11PM….and east of 65 around the 1AM hour.  This is all subject to change of course, but things are looking a little more significant just south of I-20 where 2-4″ storm snow totals are possible.  This winter storm warning is in effect until noon on Monday.  Thundersnow could become a culprit tonight for those whom have never seen it!

Winter Storm….Round 2!

This morning…..Winter Storm Warnings are on the map from I-20 northward and east of I-65. This system is a clipper that is developing into an upper level low that will bring tremendous dynamics southward and set the stage for some very heavy snowfall later tonight as Gulf moisture streams into the system. Here is your winter storm warning and winter weather advisory areas…

Snowfall will be very heavy as a change over occurs this evening.  This snow will accumulate rapidly and snowfall rates could be 2-3″ per hour…which is MUCH heavier than the snow we experienced on Friday.  Also, we are expecting some thunderstorm induced snowfall or thundersnow.  This could really make totals add up across areas that start getting the thunder.  Now, the administration here has put together a snowfall totals map and Fred Gossage created the graphic.

We will post more details as we go throughout the day on this developing winter storm situation.

Winter Storm Update: Warnings Coming and Snow Totals Call

On the maps this morning…..first we are taking a look at the Dallas Ft. Worth metro radar.  As you can see…..it is snowing across much of Central Texas this morning and it’s moving northward toward the Red River and about to cross into Oklahoma.  Winter Weather Advisories and Winter Storm Warnings are in effect across much of the metro area this morning.  I like to keep an eye on what Dallas is getting because in these situations it normally gives me an idea of what Central Alabama might deal with.  This case is really not much different in my opinion.

Now….Winter Storm Watches are still in effect for the same areas, but we have been told to expect warnings to go out later today as the storm nears along with some Winter Weather Advisories north of the warning for the expectation of 1-2″ snowfall totals.  We have finally thrown together a map this morning of what we are thinking…and keep in mind this is subject to change but given a little northward shift in things….I believe the totals along and south of the I-20 corridor have the potential to be higher than anyone else is forecasting at this point.

We believe areas south of I-20 will deal with accumulations in the 2-5″ range and somewhere between US-82 and US-84 will deal with a heavier snow band….potentially on the order of 6″+ snow totals.  Places like Selma, Camden, Evergreen, Montgomery, Auburn look to be in this greater threat for the heaviest snow axis at this time.  Again, keep in mind that a 2″ total accumulation is criteria for a winter storm warning and this will come pretty quickly as this system should be across most of the area by 6PM tomorrow night.

The HPC is maintaining it’s probabilities for 4″+ snow accumulation south of the I-20 corridor as well and I believe they are pretty much in line with my thinking.  Here is the new HPC 10% snow probabilities map.

That runs basically from a line to Pickensville – Birmingham – Anniston and southward.  Areas south of this blue line have the greatest potential to see 4″+ total snowfall accumulation through tomorrow evening.

Keep in mind…we are still some 12-24 hours away from this snow event and things are subject to change rapidly.  What we do know…is that it looks like everyone will be getting some snowfall out of this system.  It is harder to pinpoint exact accumulations with these kind of systems given our active southern subtropical jet.  As we have said in previous discussions….if the northern and southern stream phase more than forecast…we could be in for a more massive winter storm.

Stay tuned for later updates…

Surprise Winter Storm!

What can we say?  An unexpected snowfall has occurred this morning across portions of north Alabama…and winter storm warnings have been required for Lauderdale and Colbert counties where some 3″+ snow totals have already occurred!  Snow is spreading east through Huntsville where some roofs and roadways are beginning to become snow covered already.

Not extremely easy to see, but on the Huntsville cam you can see massive flakes with those trees in the background and the cars slowing down.  What a nice surprise for portions of North Alabama….and this just looks like a teaser compared to the end of the week.
